Two-Thousand Seven was the year of Superbad and Juno, the year that Bob Barker filmed his last appearance on The Price is Right, the year the final Harry Potter book was released, and the year the iPhone burst into existence.
However important and meaningful all these events were, they are not what makes 2007 a memorable year for me- which is saying something because I’m a huge Harry Potter fanatic.
On March 8, 2007 I looked at myself in the mirror and said, “Chelsea, you could meet thousands or millions of people and none of them will be Carlos.”
He had moved away in 2005 and we had kept in touch, but I was always scared to admit that the love of my life was living thousands of miles away. It was easier to pretend we could just be friends, even when we tried to make it work. My heart was in it, but the rest of me was absolutely insanely stupid.
I’ve loved Carlos since I met him in 2004, when we were 14 and both going to a school where we knew almost no one. I remember the first time I saw him, the notes we would slip in each other lockers, and how he choose the sweater-vest over the regular sweater for winter uniform.
I know a lot of people would say at 14, or even 16- the age I was on March 8th- is too young to know you’ve met the love of your life. But when you know, you know. No matter what age or how long you’ve known them, I think you know.
I loved him then, I love him now, and I’ll love him forever.
